MD Hosts Grade School Scholar Bowl Tourney

Two teams work out the answer to a question during the Grade School Scholar Bowl Tournament hosted by the MD Scholar Knights. The Mater Dei Scholar Bowl team and its moderator Mr. Scott Timmermann hosted its annual Grade School Scholar Bowl Tournament on February 4. Twenty-seven teams participated in the event from grade schools throughout Southern Illinois. Mater Dei Scholar Knights read questions, kept score, and assisted teams throughout the tournament. Members of the Mater Dei Student Council sold concessions for the tournament. The trophies were provided courtesy of Hardee’s.

Earning first place in the grade school tournament was St. Clare, second place was St. Rose, third place was Triad, and in fourth place was All Saints Academy. The consolation championship was won by Our Lady Queen of Peace.

WYSE Regional Winners

Mater Dei sent twenty-eight students to the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) regional tournament at Kaskaskia College on Thursday, February 2. The team competed against other students in the area and came away with the regional championship.

In Biology, Jon Ang finished first and Lucas Foppe finished third. In Chemistry, Joe Kasson finished first and Kevin Garber finished third. In Computer Science, Lucas Foppe finished first and Adam Richter finished third. In English, Jon Ang finished second and Laura Schlueter finished third. In Math, Kane Weinberg finished first, Kevin Garber finished second, and Tad Logullo and Joe Kasson tied for third. In Physics, Tad Logullo finished second. Lucas Foppe also won a six credit hour scholarship.

Mater Dei students participating in the WYSE regionals were Jon Ang, Dominic Antonacci, Kevin Garber, Joe Kasson, Tad Logullo, Ellen Maue, Mary Helen Otrembiak, Laura Schlueter, Alex Toennies, Ellen Toennies, Kane Weinberg, Lucas Foppe, Anna Lampe, Mackenzie McCray, Caitlan McIntyre, Maddy Mensing, Michele Thole, Shannon Mensing, Ryan Patton, Anna Quitmeyer, Adam Richter, Kari Wiegmann, Jennifer Luebbers, Hannah Albers, Ian Bruening, Liz Deeba, Drew Logullo, and Zoe Timmermann.

The WYSE team advances to the sectional tournament at McKendree University on March 12, 2012. Mr. Scott Timmermann is the WYSE moderator.

Catholic Schools Week

Larissa Jacob from St. Rose, Paige Richards from Aviston, and Gabi Schnieder from Breese don their respective grade school apparel on Old School Day during Catholic Schools Week.

Illinois State Scholars

Twenty-four seniors were named Illinois State Scholars for the Mater Dei Class of 2012. They are (sitting, left to right) Ellen Toennies, Kayla Hitpas, Mallory Mensing, Larisa Maue, Nicole Ripperda, Maddy Wilson, Lindsay Winkeler, (middle row, l to r) Jonathan Ang, Ellen Maue, Laura Schlueter, Taylor Schumacher, Emily Hellmann, Alyssa Hitpas, Corinne Holtmann, Jaime Haake, Kane Weinberg, (back row, l to r) Alex Toennies, Kevin Garber, Joe Kasson, Cody Ratermann, Mackenzie Gerling, Tad Logullo, Trent Isaak, and Dominic Antonacci. This number represents 20% of the senior class. The state average is 10%.
