Scholar Bowl

Scholar Bowl is an IHSA sanctioned activity for which all Mater Dei students are eligible.  The Scholar Knights compete at the varsity, junior varsity, and freshman levels.  A scholar bowl match consists of head-to-head competition between teams, who answer questions relating to various topics including English, history, mathematics, and science.  The fall season culminates with the South Central Scholastic Conference Tournament and the spring season culminates with IHSA playoffs.

At Mater Dei, a student may join Scholar Bowl at any time during the season – while many students elect to play all year, other students elect to play during the off-season of the other activities in which they participate.  During the season, the team practices on Wednesdays from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Joseph Hummert, Anna Quitmeyer, Mackenzie McCray, and Drew Logullo pose by the familiar Hi-Q cube at the scholar bowl tournament in Carbondale. On September 24, Mater Dei defeated Wayne City in the first round of Scholastic Hi-Q, 410-240. Mackenzie McCray and Joseph Hummert led the team with seven toss-ups each. Anna Quitmeyer scored four times and Drew Logullo scored twice. The match will be aired on WSIU-TV on October 14 at 5:30 p.m. and October 21 at 9:30 a.m. It will also be streaming on wsiu.org/hiq following the television air date. In the second round of the Scholastic Hi-Q tournament, the Scholar Knights defeated East Richland, 390-370. Adam Holbrook led the team with ten toss-ups. Mackenzie McCray and Joseph Hummert scored five toss-ups each. The match will be aired on WSIU-TV on February 3, 2013, at 5:30 p.m. and on February 10 at 9:30 a.m. It will also be streaming on wsiu.org/hiq following the television air date.The MD Scholar Knights who participated in the Masonic Sectional Scholar Bowl Tournament were (front) Mary Helen Otrembiak, Mackenzie McCray, Elizabeth Medlin, (back) Hannah Albers, Drew Logullo, and Holden Fuehne.
