Winter Athletics Award Winners

Coaches and members of the bowling team, boys basketball team, girls basketball team and cheerleading squad, as well as their families, celebrated their seasons and honored team members during the Winter Athletic Banquet on Sunday, April 23.

Bowling award winners were (from left) Keegan Spirek – Highest Average, Maria Kreke – Best Spare Percentage, and Calvin Kalmer – Most Improved Bowler.

Boys basketball award winners were (from left) Nolan Robben – Offensive Player of the Year, Cordell Beckmann – Coaches Award, Mason Toennies – Most Improved Player, Lucas Theising – Defensive Player of the Year, and Noah Gerdes – MVP.

Cheerleading award winners were (from left) Callie Becker – Co-Outstanding Leadership Award, Carly Etter – MVP, Emily Morris – Co-Outstanding Leadership Award, Alyssa Winkeler – Above and Beyond Award, and Savanna Luitjohan – Most Improved Cheerleader.

Varsity Cheerleaders Earn 3rd Place

Taking 3rd Place at the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association competition was the Mater Dei Varsity squad which includes (front row) Olivia Zachry, Mary Jo Hollenkamp, Emily Deeba, Clare Chiarolanza, Grace Timmermann, Lexi Nash, Sarah Koopmann, (back row) Larissa Jacob, Haley Johnson, Jade Beckmann, Paige Kniepmann, Jessica Peters, Alexis Cusumano, Renee Rivera, Kayla Mattson, Kelsey Knolhoff, Coach Sandy Bonvie, and Coach Amber Rankin.

Stunt Team Takes 2nd Place

JV Cheerleaders Take 4th Place

The Mater Dei Junior Varsity squad competed at the ICCA competition and took home 4th Place. Making up the JV squad is (kneeling) Grace Sammarco, Caroline Grote, Abby Haag, Lucy Hummert, Kristen Richter, Katie Vandeloo, Ashtyn Kehrer, Katie Kehrer, (back row) Coach Heather Koerkenmeier, Caitie Listello, Elizabeth Dorries, Gabriel Rund, Taylor Kuhl, Lindsay McCray, Tabatha Kitowski, and Coach Megan Holtmann.

MD Raises Money for Dillon Albers

Mater Dei football players and varsity cheerleaders conducted a special mission collection during the week of September 17-21 for Dillon Albers, a Central student and Cougar football player, who suffered a traumatic brain injury this summer. After dealing last year with the struggles of fellow MD student and football player Kane Weinberg, the football Knights and varsity cheerleaders decided to sponsor this special collection for Dillon and his family for their service project. Before the start of the annual Milk Bowl, a check for $850 was presented to current Central football player, Jake Albers, Dillon’s cousin, who represented the Albers Family. Making the presentation before the Milk Bowl were Central football coach Jim Short, MD football coach Jim Stiebel, MD football captains Mike Martz, Grant Kueper, Jake Albers, Jordan Lampe, and cheerleaders Sarah Koopmann, Larissa Jacob, Clare Chiarolanza, and Mary Jo Hollenkamp.

Mater Dei varsity, JV, and freshman cheerleaders do their routine to the school fight song before the varsity basketball game on January 6. The varsity and JV cheerleaders will compete in the IHSA and ICCA cheerleading competitions in the coming weeks.
