The administration and faculty are pleased to announce the Students of the Quarter. These students were selected by the faculty from the list of students who earned high honor roll or honor roll recognition for the second quarter of the 2019-2020 school year. Senior Caleb Zurliene, son of Craig and Shelise Zurliene of Aviston. Throughout his academic career, Caleb has enrolled in college-preparatory courses, including English Composition 101 and 102 as a senior. Outside the classroom, he is a four-year member of the basketball team and Pep Club, a three-year member of National Honor Society, and a first-year member of CareCrew. For basketball, he earned the Most Outstanding Player award as a junior. In the community, Caleb serves as the coach of the St. Boniface CYM basketball team. Finally, he is a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Following graduation, Caleb plans to attend Purdue University Northwest and to major in psychology.
Senior Emma Timmermann, daughter of Dennis and Pam Timmermann of Carlyle. Throughout her academic career, Emma has enrolled in college-preparatory courses. Outside the classroom, she is a four-year member of Art and Photography Club, a two-year member of the spring musical cast, and a first-year member of Peer Helpers. In the community, Emma recently donated her time and talent to repainting the interior of Santa’s Hut in Breese. Finally, she is a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. Following graduation, Emma plans to attend Kaskaskia College and to major in nursing.
Junior Ethan Deerhake, son Lee and Danita Deerhake of Germantown. Since his freshman year, Ethan has enrolled in nearly all honors courses for English and math, including American Literature Honors, Composition Honors, and Pre-Calculus as a junior. Outside the classroom, he is a three-year member of the soccer team and a two-year member of National Honor Society. For soccer, he received the Most Improved Player award as a freshman. Finally, Ethan is a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church.
Junior Haley Castillo, daughter of Helaman and Denise Castillo of Aviston. Since transferring to Mater Dei as a sophomore, Haley has enrolled in nearly all honors courses for English and math, including Algebra II & Trigonometry Honors and Composition Honors as a junior. Outside the classroom, she is a two-year member of the cross-country team and soccer team and a first-year member of Pep Club and Student Ambassadors. In the community, Haley has served as a volunteer for various events, including Pedaling for Parkinson’s and Galen’s Blankets. Finally, she is a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, where she serves as a confirmation retreat leader, member of St. Francis Youth Group, and Vacation Bible School volunteer.
Sophomore Sebastian Bissonnette, son of Peter and Amy Bissonnette of Breese. In his first year at Mater Dei, having transferred as a sophomore, Sebastian’s courses include Algebra II & Trigonometry Honors and English II Honors. Outside the classroom, he is a member of jazz band and Scholar Bowl. Finally, Sebastian is a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, where he serves as a member of Breese Youth Ministry.
Sophomore Sophie Hustedde, daughter of Kent Hustedde and Shannon Fehrmann of Breese. In both her freshman and sophomore year, Sophie has enrolled in all honors courses for English, math, and science, including Algebra II & Trigonometry Honors, Biology Honors, English II Honors, and Geometry Honors as a sophomore. For her academic achievements, she received an award for Algebra I Honors. Outside the classroom, Sophie is a two-year member of the softball team, Student Council, and volleyball team; and a first-year member of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Student Ambassadors. Finally, Sophie is a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church.
Freshman Ben Miller, son of Jason and Kim Miller of Breese. In his first year at Mater Dei, Ben’s courses include Algebra I Honors and Physical Science Honors. Outside the classroom, he is freshman class secretary and a member of the chorus, concert band, golf team, indoor percussion, marching band, pep band, Pep Club, St. Vincent de Paul Society, spring musical crew, Teens for Life, and yearbook staff. Finally, Ben is a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, where he serves as a confirmation retreat volunteer, lector, and member of Breese Youth Ministry.
Freshman Shyanne Thompson, daughter of Doug and Khristy Thompson of Lebanon. In her first year at Mater Dei, Shyanne’s courses include Algebra I Honors, English I Honors, and Physical Science Honors. Outside the classroom, she is a member of the yearbook staff. Finally, Shyanne is a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church.
