How to Support Mater Dei

Since 1954, Mater Dei has nurtured the spiritual, moral, intellectual, emotional, and social growth of generations of students.  Through the generous donations of her benefactors, Mater Dei can continue to fulfill this mission for future generations.

Therefore, we are pleased to provide descriptions of the various ways donors can choose to support Mater Dei.  Every donation – no matter the size – makes a difference!

Know that members of the Mater Dei community – administration, faculty, students, parents, alumni, and friends – are truly grateful to every benefactor for his/her support!  “We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers.” (1 Thessalonians 1:2)

Annual Fund

The success of the Annual Fund, the major source of revenue for Mater Dei Catholic High School, is a direct result of the commitment of a variety of constituents who have been connected with Mater Dei Catholic High School in a meaningful way.

Each year, the Annual Fund Drive begins July 1 and ends June 30 of the following year.

As always, the Mater Dei community is truly grateful to all who donate to the Annual Fund, as their donations support Mater Dei in a variety of ways.

ANNUAL REPORT
The Mater Dei Catholic High School Annual Report, which includes donations received from July 1 through June 30, is distributed in August.  This publication serves as an opportunity to express our gratitude to all our benefactors - alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff, and students - who have helped make the past school year successful.  The listing of all who impacted Mater Dei Catholic High School during the past school year is a complex task, and every effort is taken to include all who have contributed.

We invite you to review our most recent annual report: 2020-2021 Mater Dei Catholic High School Annual Report

Planned Giving

Planned gifts encompass a variety of charitable giving methods that allow donors to integrate their charitable, family, financial, and personal goals.  Moreover, planned gifts often provide valuable tax benefits.

When considering all types of real and personal property and tangible and intangible assets, the possible types of planned gifts seem endless.  Therefore, brief descriptions of common planned gifts are provided below.  (Please note that in the descriptions below, the text "Mater Dei" applies to both Mater Dei Catholic High School and the Mater Dei Foundation.)

Still, we encourage donors to contact their financial planner, accountant, or attorney in order to determine both the planned gift that best meets their goals and the associated tax benefits, as tax benefits vary with each type of planned gift.

As always, the Mater Dei community is truly grateful to all who support Mater Dei through a planned gift.

WHAT TO GIVE

Cash
A donor may choose to donate cash immediately or to designate Mater Dei as a beneficiary of cash through his/her will or living trust.

Life Insurance
A donor may choose to give Mater Dei outright and complete ownership of a life insurance policy or to designate Mater Dei as a beneficiary of an existing or new policy.

Retirement Assets
Retirement assets include retirement plans and accounts such as an IRA, 401(k), or 403(b).  A donor may choose to donate (transfer) funds to Mater Dei immediately or to designate Mater Dei as a beneficiary of the funds.

Stocks
A donor may choose to donate stock to Mater Dei immediately or to designate Mater Dei as a beneficiary of the stock.

Tangible Personal Property
Donations of tangible personal property may include artwork, jewelry, and antiques.  A donor may choose to give Mater Dei outright and complete ownership of tangible personal property or to designate Mater Dei as a beneficiary of tangible personal property through his/her will or living trust.

Real Property
Donations of real property include personal residences, vacations homes, rental property, and farmland.  A donor may choose to give Mater Dei outright and complete ownership of real property or to designate Mater Dei as a beneficiary of real property through his/her will or living trust.

HOW TO GIVE

Wills and Living Trust
A donor may designate Mater Dei as a beneficiary of his/her will or living trust by adding a charitable provision to an existing document or including a charitable provision in a new document.  Examples of donations include a specific cash amount or property item, a percentage of the donor’s assets, or the remainder of assets following the distribution of assets to other beneficiaries.

Beneficiary Designations
A donor may designate Mater Dei as a beneficiary of his/her financial accounts, retirement assets, or life insurance by contacting his/her financial institution, retirement plan administration, or life insurance company.

Charitable Gift Annuity
By funding a charitable gift annuity, a donor both supports Mater Dei and enhances his/her financial security.

In general, a donor funds a charitable gift annuity for the benefit of Mater Dei through a donation of cash and/or appreciated stock.  From the annuity, fixed payments are then made to the donor and/or his/her designee for the remainder of the life of the donor and/or his/her designee.  When the annuity ends, the gift portion of the annuity becomes fully available to Mater Dei.

Charitable Remainder Trust
By funding a charitable remainder trust, a donor both supports Mater Dei and retains an interest in his/her property for the benefit of himself/herself or his/her family.

In general, a donation of cash and/or appreciated stock is placed in an irrevocable trust.  From the trust, regular payments are then made to a donor and/or his/her designee for a period of years or the remainder of the life of the donor and/or his/her designee.  A donor may select the payout rate that meets his/her needs (subject to tax regulations), as well as if the trust will make fixed payments (annuity trust) or payments that change with market conditions (unitrust).  When the trust ends, the remaining assets in the trust become fully available to Mater Dei.

Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship Donation

The Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship program, which is administered by Empower Illinois, provides donors with the opportunity to simultaneously support Mater Dei Catholic High School and reduce their Illinois tax liability.

Specifically, by donating to Mater Dei via the Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship program, a donor receives a tax credit equal to 75% of their donation on his/her Illinois state taxes.

For example, for a donation of $1,000, a donor will receive a $750 tax credit for his/her Illinois state taxes.  Thus, his/her out-of-pocket donation is only $250.  However, Mater Dei receives the full $1,000 donation for the purpose of providing tuition assistance to families in need.

Please note that while the donation process may initially appear complicated, the steps are actually quite simple!  Moreover, the Empower Illinois website provides a step-by-step guide to assist donors.

As always, the Mater Dei community is truly grateful to all who donate to the Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship program, as their donations directly support our students!

Calendar Drive

Since the 1985-1986 school year, the annual Mater Dei Calendar Drive has played a vital role in our fundraising efforts. This fundraiser, the only fundraiser for which we request participation by all students, supports the Mater Dei general fund.

A key component of the success of the Mater Dei Calendar Drive is its simplicity: for only $25, a buyer receives a calendar and 39chances to win cash ($30 daily, $100 and $500 monthly, and $1,000 and $2,000 on December 31).  (Of course, a leap year brings an additional chance to win!)  The calendar lists key events and includes color photos showcasing our students.

Of course, the main component of the success of the Mater Dei Calendar Drive is the support of both those who sell calendars and those who purchase calendars.  In recent years, over 4,000 calendars are sold each year!  Thus, the Mater Dei community is truly grateful to all who support the Calendar Drive!
